Martin Stumpf, Sound
We were shocked & profoundly saddened to hear of Martin's tragic death in August of 2005. Martin came to the Liemba film crew with over 12 years experience as a sound engineer in music, radio, and film, including having worked extensively with African musicians and journalists. As a sound engineer in New York City, Paris and Lübeck, Germany, he had participated in the recordings of Manu Dibango, Ray Lema, Salif Keita, Papa Wemba, King Sunny Ade, Bongo and Francis Mbappé, among others. In 2002 Martin moved to the DR Congo with the United Nations peace keeping mission MONUC to help establish the Radio Okapi network of stations that radio-phonically unified this war torn country and continues to broadcast in the name of peace. His roles at Radio Okapi included installing, optimizing and managing 8 radio studios as well as his favorite activity: teaching audio production skills to the Congolese engineers and journalists. Martin was a great, tireless & just spirit. We were honored to have him on the project and will miss him dearly.
